Post Trip Reflections

by Joan Kaiser

We have returned from South Africa and I'm still having difficulty writing a blog. It was an amazing and eye-opening journey filled with many emotions. It was truly overwhelming at times, and I still feel like I'm processing so much. Some of the things that struck me the most were:

The People
The people who work and volunteer at Mosaic, Ma's vir Wellington, Avodah, and in the community, are truly awe inspiring! Their level of warmth and selflessness is beyond compare. They're definitely making a difference in the lives of the people they serve. When we were at Cornel's home there was a chalkboard on the wall with this quote, "The little things matter. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. What is in your hands." These wonderful people are certainly doing something and are amazing role models for us all!

The Poverty
It is really difficult to wrap your head around the poverty and seeing it firsthand. There were moments that literally brought me to tears.  Although with that being said, it was also beautiful to witness people's hope, faith, love and happiness even in some of the poorest conditions. The kids still laugh and play. They don't know what they don't know. They find happiness in the simple things and there is definitely something to be said for that.

The Beauty
South Africa has some absolutely beautiful landscapes. Everywhere you look there are breathtaking views of the mountains. We were fortunate enough to take a helicopter ride and get a bird's eye view. We also spent some time on Lion's Head Mountain, which for the record is a more challenging hike than we first realized!

I feel very blessed to have been able to go to South Africa and spend time with amazing people who truly opened my eyes in more ways than one. There are some experiences that will stay with you forever and this is certainly one of them!

South Africa: A Journey of Heart, Humility, and Hope

by Lynda Commale Africa has a way of changing you. My first trip to the continent — to Uganda years ago — opened my eyes to both unimaginable poverty and profound resilience. I witnessed death firsthand, felt the weight of loss, and the joy of giving. During that trip, I helped distribute 2,000 bed nets to prevent malaria — an experience that shaped who I am today.  When I committed to this journey to South Africa, I told myself, You’ve seen the worst of poverty. This will be easier. I was wrong — very wrong. South Africa is breathtaking. The spring sunshine, the vast skies, and the warmth of the people fill my heart with joy. But once the work began, I quickly realized that beauty and heartbreak often coexist. Day Two: From Laughter to Heartache  This morning started peacefully, with connection and joy. Last night we had learned more deeply about the mission of Ma’s of Wellington — a remarkable organization serving the preschoolers of this community with love, education...

We prepared sample crafts and prepped for Mosaic's afterschool program on Friday. I just added a bunch of pictures for you to see our progress.
